About Us – Larkano Municipal Corporation

Larkano Municipal Corporation dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first Municipality Office building was constructed in 1855 at the end of Empire Road, initially serving as the office of the Deputy Collector. In 1900, Mr. Tupper became the first President of the municipality, and after Larkano was given district status in 1901, a proper Municipal Committee office was established in the building erected in 1885. The first municipal election was held in 1918, which brought Sirae Shah Muhammad Lahori as the first Muslim and democratic President, though his tenure was cut short by his untimely death.

Over time, the municipality grew into a structured civic institution, and in 2002 the offices of the Municipal Corporation were relocated from the historic old building to new premises on the outskirts near Sachal Sarmast Colony. In line with the Sindh Local Government Act and subsequent reforms, the Larkano Municipal Corporation was reorganized in 2013 to include 20 Union Committees, later divided into four towns—Sachal, Hyderi, Dari, and Empire Town.

The corporation is headed by an elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor, with notable figures such as Aslam Shaikh (2016–2020) and Anwar Ali Luhur serving in leadership roles. In recent years, further developments include the establishment of the Larkana Water and Sewerage Corporation in 2023 to manage essential utilities, while the LMC continues to function as the key civic body to oversee urban development, salaries, pensions, and municipal services for the city.

History of Larkano Municipal Corporation

Larkana’s municipal governance dates back to 1853 when the Larkana Municipality was established, later evolving into a Municipal Corporation  and a significant urban center long before the subcontinent’s partition, serving as a district headquarters since 1901 and a divisional HQ for many years.

Key Milestones:

Pre-1850s: Larkana served as an important town, eventually becoming a District Headquarters by 1901.

1853: The foundation of municipal administration began with the establishment of the Larkana Municipality.

Upgradation: The municipality was later upgraded to a Municipal Corporation status, signifying its growth and increased administrative responsibilities.

Post-Independence: Larkana continued as a vital administrative hub, remaining a divisional headquarters in Sindh for many years.

The district was reorganized with the creation of Kamber-Shahdadkot District.

In essence, Larkana’s municipal history reflects its long-standing importance as a regional center in Sindh, evolving from a colonial-era municipality to a significant municipal corporation managing a large urban population.
